The challenge set by Hong Kong Contemporary Art (HOCA) Foundation, the organisers of Alexandre Farto aka Vhils’ solo exhibition “Debris”, was to gather the artist’s works into a single monograph.

Alexandre Farto aka Vhils’ art is only now beginning to be known in Asia. The artist’s solo exhibition that opened in Hong Kong last March can be seen as his calling card in that part of the world and served to promote his latest work.

The work around monographs and exhibition books tends to follow a discreet approach, based on an almost neutral design, in order to safeguard the integrity of the artworks.

EPHEMERA is a tactile book, with textures, volumetric physical elements, different papers and materials. We framed the work with the necessary neutrality and designed the text pages by making use of typefaces specifically designed for this book and the artist’s new visual identity, which is explored in its elasticity and plasticity. The result is a design piece that tries to make a point of honour in terms of visual originality without compromising the artistic content.
